Understanding Type II vs. Type III Vinyl Wallcoverings: What Designers should know

When specifying materials for high-traffic commercial interiors, the right wallcovering makes a world of difference. Type II and Type III vinyl wallcoverings are the gold standard - but which do you choose?

What Is Type II Vinyl?

Type II vinyl fabric-backed wallcoverings are medium to heavy-duty and used in offices, schools, medical clinics, and corridors. They weigh 20–28 oz/yd and strike a balance between toughness and aesthetic versatility.

What Is Type III Vinyl?

Type III wallcoverings are ultra-durable, designed for the most demanding environments—think airports, hospital corridors, and elevator banks. Weighing 33+ oz/yd, they provide superior impact and abrasion resistance.

Type II vs. Type III: Key Differences

  • Durability: Type III resists tearing and abrasion more than Type II.

  • Application: Type II for general traffic; Type III for extreme conditions.

  • Weight: Type III is heavier and more rigid.

When to Specify Each

Use Type II in corporate offices, hospitality, or educational settings. Use Type III when daily impacts or heavy equipment may contact the wall surface - such as healthcare or transport hubs.
